Freshman Computer Requirement

The Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology requires that all incoming freshmen to the college have a notebook or laptop computer that meets or exceeds the Mobile Monarch Student Notebook Program’s recommended models for engineering majors.

Students are strongly encouraged to consider purchasing one of the Mobile Monarch Student Notebook Program’s notebooks, however, students may bring their own notebook if it meets the specifications. For more information, please visit: http://occs.odu.edu/mobilemonarch/.

Beginning Fall Semester 2011, a limited number of laptop computers will be available for loan to incoming freshman engineering students through the library laptop loaner program. The loan is for emergency use and is limited to seven days duration. The availability of laptops will be limited to freshman engineering students only on a first-come, first-served basis.

Students are asked to note that they will not be able to save any files to the laptop. Students should save all files to a flash drive or their network directory. The laptop will automatically login with a user account and any changes or files saved to the computer will be erased when the computer is either re-booted or shut-down.

If the laptop is lost, damaged beyond repair or stolen while checked out, the replacement fee is $1400. A $15 per day late fee shall be assessed if a student is late in returning a loaned laptop. All instances will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
