   Welcome to the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department web site. We hope that you will find it useful and that it will encourage you to consider the study of Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Aerospace Engineering (AE).

   The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree program at the Old Dominion University provides students with a broad preparation in the elements of engineering design and analysis. The program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. Program graduates are prepared for professional careers as mechanical engineers, and for graduate study in mechanical and aerospace engineering or related fields.

   Graduate degrees offered are the Master of Science, Master of Engineering, Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Engineering in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The graduate programs have been designed to prepare graduates for professional practice in the many facets of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, including teaching, research, development, design, and consulting. Graduates are prepared for challenging and creative work in mechanical and aerospace engineering with industries, research organizations, consulting firms, and government agencies.

   In a summary, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineers design and manufacture systems which convert energy into useful work. Using the laws of nature, along with mathematical analysis, communications and computational skills, students are educated to develop creative solutions for societal needs. As a fundamental engineering discipline, Mechanical and Aerospace engineers are sought by virtually every industry and government agency. Mechanical and Aerospace Engineers are employed in areas specializing in design, research and development, manufacturing, production, management, project planning, consulting, testing, quality assurance and technical sales. In addition, some Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering graduates pursue graduate study that prepares them for research, development and university careers.

Seniors Win a NASA Competition: 

   A team of nine MAE undergraduate students (Ryan Carteris, Amanda Gasparik, Mairel Gonzalez, Sarah Hunter, Marie Ivanco, JaMahl Sapp, Tyler Scrivner, Michael Serra, Luke Twum-Apofo), co-advised by Dr. Colin Britcher and Dr. Robert Ash, designed and manufactured four non-pneumatic wheels that won the 2013 NASA RASC-AL Lunar Wheel Design Competition at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. The winning project was part of the capstone senior-design course series, MAE 434W/435, taught by Dr. Stacie Ringleb.

   Team members Ryan Carteris, Marie Ivanco, Tyler Scrivner and Sarah Hunter, and Dr. Ash attended the competition event at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. After a full day of competition, driving their lunar-wheeled Gator on JSC’s rockyard, simulating lunar and Martian terrains, and making a formal presentation to a NASA design review panel followed by a Q&A session, the winning Old Dominion MAE senior design team edged out designs entered by the other two finalist teams from the University of Maryland and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. From a Successful Alumnus:

   The faculty in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at ODU focuses on helping students learn and develop the skills needed to be successful engineers. They offer individual attention, collaboration on research projects, and clear direction in the classroom. I feel that my academic success would have been severely hindered were it not for the combination of professors at ODU and their sincere desire to help me succeed. I am grateful for the faculty members and for the challenging academic environment they have provided that has allowed me to expand my knowledge base and achieve my academic goals.
